Overspray A stencil Art Show

No Comments All, Art Events

SAN DIEGO, CA Stencil art provides the urban artist with a tool to rapidly and effectively stamp their message across the city’s walls. This exhibition OVERSPRAY: A Stencil Art Show, at BASIC on December 27, presents works by a group of artists using the stencil as their main tool, however, inside the gallery space the artist can elaborate on the simplistic, frantic overspray of the streets. One artist on show is Keemowerk, whose style consists of intricate multilayer stencils, mainly in black and white. Many of his pieces have up to ten layers. Inspired by Japanese animation, he creates portraits of Mary Jane Skulls as part of an on-going series. His goal is to complete 100 portraits. Born in Manila, Philippines in 1980, Keemowerks is a self taught, National City-based artist who continually evolves and refines his style as a stencil artist. William Bucher, a local artist, will exhibit his latest work which lays in-between street art and traditional painting. He aims to bring out the beauty of street art in comparison to the conventional museum aesthetic. He enjoys creating his stencils by hand, as opposed to machine, allowing himself the freedom to change his piece at the drop of a hat, according to Butcher With my art, it’s never done til it’s on a wall.â€ù Also exhibiting is Konstant Be who, after receiving a BA in psychology in 2007, decided his true passion was art. Without any formal training Konstant developed a multifaceted technique which blends spray-paint, acrylic paint, stencils and colour pencil. His favourite colour is pink. He admits to being a new age artist of the Internet, connecting him to an unlimited amount of inspiration. Some of the other artists exhibiting include Rex Edhlund, Victor Villa, grandlarsen, Patrick Seibt, Michael Mahaffey, Nite Owl and more. There will also be live DJs. The o! pening s tarts at 7pm and runs until 12am on December 27. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.

The Goods Show Reviewed

No Comments All, Show Reviews

BUSINESS IN THE FRONT, PARTY IN THE BACK.

Or so it seemed so at last Friday’s “The Goods Show”.  While large amounts of people were fighting off Black Friday crowds and waiting hours in line for their discounted TVs, local artists and vendors were showing off their goods at 3rdspace gallery in University Heights.  With as many art exhibitions as San Diego puts on, this is definitely one of the better ones to check out.  Similar to the popular Thread show that makes it’s way through San Diego twice a year, the Goods Show “Black Friday” event was set up in a creative, market-like scenario. Attendees were provided with a wide variety of designs and paintings, such as Eric Wixon and Eric Whitman, in addition to fashion, jewelry, live music, and charitable causes.  Did I mentions there was also adult beverages for those purchasing drink tickets? Oh yeah, that too. ;)

Despite the occasional audio difficulties, the event ran rather smoothly and drew in large amounts of people all throughout the day with their art sales starting at noon.  And of course, as the sun went down,  the party began – you just had to be careful not to trip over anything when walking throughout to the different areas of art as literally every inch of space showcased a different artist.

Local art fares such as The Goods Show are a great way to see and/or purchase art from some of the best up and coming designers in town, as well as contributing goods to foundations such as the featured Corazon De Vida.  So in regard to this season’s successful event I have to raise my glass: Cheers 3rdspace!
